TSH Scholar Model TSH creates opportunities for young people through academics and cultural enrichment in an after-school environment via a scholar model which is detailed below. Academic Enrichment – The primary focal point of our program is the academic success of our participants. We aim to achieve this goal by providing lessons and opportunities that will aid our participants in enhancing their academic performance. We utilize such tools as the computer based, vocabulary and reading comprehension program, Failure Free Reading to help our participants develop their literacy skills. To further achieve this goal our teachers guide our participants in completing their homework and also facilitate tutorial sessions in the fundamental areas of education such as math, language arts, and science. Cultural Enrichment - Throughout the course of the 2007-2008 academic year our participants will have the opportunity to participate in a vast array of enrichment activities presented to expand their social and cultural awareness. TSH offers weekly classes in visual arts through the ArtReach program, African-Brazilian martial arts known as Capoeira, and Modern and African Dance through our partnership with Moving in the Spirit. Financial Literacy – In an effort to provide the most well rounded experience and opportunities for our participants possible TSH has implemented the Junior Achievement curriculum into our weekly schedule. These lessons allow our participants to learn about the economics of living and working in our society, as well as the importance of setting financial goals. Through the Junior Achievement curriculum our participants also have the opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship, creating a savings plan, and career planning. We work with our participants to make these lessons tangible through our Scholar Dollars incentives program and the presentation of the Study Hall Bank and Store. Civic Engagement – At TSH we believe in instilling in our participants the importance of making a positive contribution to our society at every age. During the summer of 2007 we kicked off our Campaign for Change, a continuous project that engages our participants in community service dedicated to the social issues they felt negatively impacted them, their families, or our society at large. Our participants took on the task of raising awareness about their respective causes, and funds to be donated to the non-profit organization of their choosing. Wellness – Childhood Obesity, Asthma, Allergies, and Diabetes are just a few of the health concerns that face our participants. Through the daily provision of healthy snacks and meals, educational workshops on the importance of preparing and eating nutritious meals for both our parents and participants, as well as raising awareness about the health issues that most impact our community, TSH is committed to the overall wellness of our participants. Additionally, in 2007-2008 our participants have the opportunity to become more active by participating on the TSH swim team. |
